Restorative Exercise - what is it?

So what do we “restore” with Restorative Exercise? We restore our bodies from our sedentary lifestyle. There are many things that are included in the concept of Nutritious Movement Restorative Exercise. There is the biomechanics and the physiology - how the body works and how the positions of the body and the geometry of your bones and joints influence the physiology.

Then there is the environment, and your behaviour in this environment. Sometimes your environment dictates your behaviour. For example, if you work on a computer, you have to look at the screen, there is no choice about it. Or if you are a traffic control officer you have to stand, there is no choice about it (but there is still the choice of how stand and what else you do though). Sometimes your environment suggests your behaviour, but you do have a choice - for example you have the choice to take the stairs, although there is a lift in the building.

Starting to build a restorative exercise practice includes corrective exercises, but it also includes a set of intentions and thoughts and awareness about your behaviours. You can:

a). become a lot more aware of what are the habits that led to a particular discomfort, pain or problem and
b).at the same time to use the corrective exercises to improve your body alignment and health in such a way that developing new and better habits becomes easier.

During a Restorative Exercise session, workshop or class we talk about things that you do with your body – consciously or unconsciously and in what ways you can modify your environment and your behaviour for a different outcome.

Most often the desired outcome is "no pain" or less pain, but I have had people have all kinds of "bonus" outcomes, including better quality of life, more clarity, and even less coughing!

If you are ready to explore your outcomes, contact me and we will figure out the best we can work together.

Love,
Elena
